The Science Behind a Golf Warm Up

“The Science Behind a Golf Warmup”, by Ben Langdown,  is a great read for golfers who are struggling to get more distance on their drive. Most golfers think that getting a new driver will help you with distance, instead what if you could add 40 plus yards to your drive just by stretching.

Sean Graham and Dr. Bridge did a study on 3 different types of warm-ups golfers do.

1. The first warm-up is just hitting range balls which is what most golfers do before playing a round of golf.

2. The next warm-up they tested was dynamic stretching which stretches out the muscles used in the golf swing. These stretches consist of Overhead Squats, Open and Close the Gate, and Clock Lunges.

3. The third warm-up they used in their studies is resistance band training.

They showed video examples of the exercises in the article which I highly recommend watching. The five exercises are Crab walks, Speed Skaters, Shoulder Blade Retractions, Lunge and Rotate, and Stomp and Rotate. They showed the final results which involved clubhead speed, ball speed, and driver carry distance. Golfers who did the band stretches before their round saw the most increase in ball speed, clubhead speed, and driver carry.

Below is a link to the article's statistics

Stretching before golf is a science that will help increase your drives and make you a better golfer.

You can do band work and foam rolling at home before you head to the course, but include a dynamic warmup just before you swing.
